Playing Handicap 10
Stroke indexes 1–10: enter 1. Stroke indexes 11–18: enter 0.
Ten holes receive one shot; eight receive none. Total: 10 shots.
Turn a gross hole score into standard Stableford points. Use the handicap strokes already allocated to this hole, rather than entering your Handicap Index.
Rules and assumptions checked .
Individual Stableford with par as the target. Use the par printed on your scorecard—usually 3, 4 or 5. This tool accepts par 3–6, gross scores 1–30 and hole strokes from −10 to 10.
Why include par 6? The USGA par guidelines include par 6 for very long holes. Use the published par for your tees; do not assign it from distance alone. Guidance checked .

Illustrative example: gross 5 − 1 stroke received = net 4 on a par 4.
Compare the net score with the hole's par.
| Net score versus par | Points |
|---|---|
| Two or more over, or not holed out | 0 |
| One over | 1 |
| Level | 2 |
| One under | 3 |
| Two under | 4 |
| Three under | 5 |
| Four or more under | 6 |
In this format, net score = gross score − strokes received. A negative strokes value adds shots back. Points stop at zero and six.
A pickup scores zero here. It does not create a gross score or an adjusted score for handicap submission.
Your Handicap Index, Course Handicap and Playing Handicap are different. The Committee sets the allowance for the competition; strokes are then allocated to holes using the published stroke indexes. Enter only the strokes allocated to this hole. Do not apply an allowance twice.
These examples use an already confirmed Playing Handicap for individual Stableford over 18 holes. The competition allowance and any required adjustments have already been applied. Do not reduce these numbers by an allowance again.
Read the published stroke index on the scorecard, not the physical hole number. Stroke index 2 could belong to hole 14, for example. Use the correct card for your event and tees.
Stroke indexes 1–10: enter 1. Stroke indexes 11–18: enter 0.
Ten holes receive one shot; eight receive none. Total: 10 shots.
Stroke indexes 1–2: enter 2. Stroke indexes 3–18: enter 1.
One shot on every hole uses 18 shots; the remaining two go to stroke indexes 1 and 2. Total: 20 shots.
Every stroke index from 1 to 18: enter 2.
Two shots on each of 18 holes use all 36 shots. Do not enter 36 in the single-hole field.
Stroke indexes 17 and 18: enter −1. Stroke indexes 1–16: enter 0.
Unless the Committee specifies otherwise, give one shot back on each of those two holes. In this tool, −1 adds one to the gross score before points are calculated.
With Playing Handicap 20, a gross 5 on a par 4 at stroke index 2 gets two shots: enter 2 to get net 3 and 3 points. At stroke index 3, the same gross score gets one shot: enter 1 to get net 4 and 2 points.
With golf plus 2, gross 4 on a par 4 at stroke index 17 gives one shot back: enter −1 to get net 5 and 1 point. At stroke index 16, enter 0: net 4 and 2 points. A Playing Handicap of zero receives or gives back no shots.
These examples do not cover 9-hole, extra-hole, match-play or team allocations, or score adjustments for handicap submission. The Committee's published terms control your competition.
Allocation examples checked against R&A Appendix C and USGA stroke index guidance. The handicap values and hole scores here are explanatory examples.
Need the earlier tee-conversion step? Use the 18-hole unrounded Course Handicap calculator. It does not supply final competition strokes.
Follow the event's Terms of Competition. This page does not calculate a Handicap Index, a Course Handicap, allowances or 9-hole/extra-hole allocations.
The tool uses the standard individual Stableford table with par as the fixed target. A different target, modified Stableford points, team formats and scramble scoring need their own rules. Competition-level penalties or disqualification can also affect the final result; this is a hole-points aid, not a ruling or official score submission.
Playing a scramble instead? Separate four-player scramble allowance tool; this individual points table is a different format.
