Convert a Handicap Index for a set of rated 18-hole tees. This tool shows the unrounded calculation before any competition allowance. It does not give your final Playing Handicap.

Check the tee conversion
Use the current 18-hole ratings and par for the applicable tee set and player category supplied by the club. Do not mix ratings from different tees.

Approx. 21.232743
Illustrative example: Index 18.2, Slope 125, Course Rating 73.1 and par 72. Display only to six decimal places; no event allowance or final rounding applied.
The Course Rating-minus-par part matters: Index 18 on Slope 113 with rating 73 and par 72 gives an unrounded 19, not 18.
A golf plus Index is negative in the arithmetic. Golf plus 2 therefore uses −2 before the tee conversion.
This is the current formula described by England Golf iGolf, including the Course Rating-minus-par change introduced in Great Britain and Ireland in April 2024. Confirm applicability with your club or authorised association.
Four worked conversion examples
Equal rating and par: Index 18, Slope 113, rating 72, par 72 → unrounded 18.
A different tee rating: Index 18.2, Slope 125, rating 73.1, par 72 → approximately 21.232743 before allowance or final rounding.
Golf plus 2: enter magnitude 2 and select the plus box. At Slope 113, rating 72 and par 72 → mathematical −2, shown in golf notation as plus 2.
Zero Index can still change: Index 0, Slope 113, rating 71, par 72 → mathematical −1, or golf plus 1.
All values above are explanatory examples, not ratings for a named course or player results.
Do not confuse this with Playing Handicap
Your Handicap Index travels with you. Course Handicap converts it for the tees. Playing Handicap also depends on the competition allowance and any relevant adjustments. The organiser or Committee confirms those terms.
R&A clarification 6.2a/1 says to apply allowances to the full calculated Course Handicap to avoid double rounding, with a limited practical exception. This tool stops before that allowance and before final-event rounding. Its six-decimal display is an approximation, not the full precision or an official final stroke allocation.
No 9-hole conversion, mixed-tee adjustment, handicap eligibility decision, score differential, Handicap Index issuance or score submission is provided. Do not halve this result for nine holes or enter it directly as the strokes for one hole.
For hole points after your Playing Handicap and hole allocation are confirmed, use the Stableford points calculator. For the separate team weighting step using Course Handicaps, see the four-player scramble allowance tool; confirm final event treatment with the organiser.
